
単語や文、文節といった問題をつなぐ役割をもつ品詞を接続詞といいます。接続詞には、and、or、when、if、because、thatなどがあります。
and
andは、「〜と〜」、「そして」という意味を表します。
・Marcie and Patty are good friends.
or
orは、「または」、「あるいは」「〜か〜」という意味を表します。
・Which do you like, baseball or football?
because
becauseは、「なぜならば」と言う意味を表します。
・I like Charlie because he is kind.
when
whenは疑問視の「いつ〜?」ではなく、「〜の時」という意味を表します。
・When you played baseball, Schroeder played the piano.
・ Schroeder played the piano, when you played baseball.
・ Schroeder played the piano, when you played baseball.
if
ifは「もし〜ならば」という意味を表します。
・If you want to meet Mrs. Donovan, you should visit teachers’ room.
・You should visit teachers’ room, if you want to meet Mrs. Donovan.
・You should visit teachers’ room, if you want to meet Mrs. Donovan.
that
thatは、「〜すること」という意味を表します。
・I know that Charlie’s dog is clever.
・I told Linus that he should wash his towel.

使える場所の違い
and、or、that、becauseは文の中盤にしかことはできませんが、whenとifは文頭にも文の中盤に使うことができます。また、thatは省略をすることができます。

・When you played baseball, Schroeder played the piano.

【if】
