【英語の基本】最上級

　最上級（Superlative）は「一番〜だ」、「最も〜」と言う意味を表し、３つ以上のものを比較するときに用います。

最上級の基本

◯形容詞／副詞 + -est

◯the most + 形容詞／副詞

・tall：the tallest　「一番背が高い」

・fast：the fastest　「一番速い」

・beautiful：the most beautiful　「一番美しい」

最上級の作り方

　形容詞・副詞の長さによって、最上級の形が変わります。

（１）短い単語（１音節） → -estをつける

・tall → the tallest　「一番背が高い」

・fast → the fastest　「一番速い」

・strong → the strongest　「一番高い」

・Franklin is the tallest boy in the class.
「フランクリンはこのクラスで背が一番高い」

・This car is the fastest in the world.
「この車は世界で一番速い」

（２）eで終わる単語 → stをつける

・large → the largest　「一番大きい」

・nice → the nicest　「一番素敵」

（３）短母音 + 子音で終わる単語 → 子音を重ねて-est

・big → the biggest　「一番大きい」

・hot → the hottest　「一番暑い」

・fat → the fattest　「一番太っている」

・Today is the hottest day of the year.
「今日は今年一番暑い日だ」

（４）長い単語（２音節以上） → the most + 形容詞

・interesting → the most interesting　「最も面白い」

・beautiful → the most beautiful　「最も美しい」

・carefully → the most carefully　「最も注意深く」

・This book is the most interesting of all.
「この本が一番面白い」

・Violet is the most beautiful girl in the school.
「ヴァイオレットは学校で一番美しい」

（５）不規則変化の最上級

　一部の単語は不規則に変化します。

・good / well：the best　「一番いい／上手に」
・bad / badly：the worst　「一番悪い／ひどく」
・far：the farthest / the furthest　「一番遠い」

・This restaurant is the best in town.
「このレストランは町で一番いい」

・This situation is the worst I’ve ever seen.
「これは私が見た中で最悪の状況だ」

・This is the farthest planet from the Sun.
「これは太陽から一番遠い惑星だ」

最上級を使う表現

（１）「〜の中で一番..」 → the 最上級 + in / of

・Pigpen is the smartest student in the class.
ピッグペンはクラスで一番頭がいい」

・This is the most beautiful city in the world.
「これは世界でもっとも美しい都市だ」

→ in + 場所／集団

in the world「世界で」
in the class「クラスで」
in Japan「日本で」

→ of + 範囲

　of all「すべての中で」
of the three「３つの中で」

（２）「これまでで一番..」→ the 最上級 + ever

・This is the best movie I’ve ever seen.
「これは私が見た中で一番いい映画だ」

・Schroeder is the most talented singer I have ever met.
「シュローダーは私が今まであった中で最も才能のある歌手だ」

（３）「ずば抜けて〜」 → by far / much + the 最上級

・This is by far the most interesting book.
「これは断然一番面白い本だ」

・Patty is much the best player in the team.
「パティーはチームで断然１番の選手だ」

最上級の強調表現

◯ by far + the 最上級

・This is by far the best choice.
「これが断然１番の選択だ」

◯ one of the 最上級 + 複数名詞

・Charlie is one of the smartest students in the class.
「チャーリーはクラスで最も頭のいい生徒の1人だ」

◯ the very 最上級

・This is the very best solution.
「これはまさに最良の解決策だ」

比較級と最上級の違い

◯ 比較級（-er / more + than）：２つのものを比べる

・This book is more interesting than that one.
「この本はあの本より面白い」

◯ 最上級（the -est/ the most + in / of）

・This book is the most interesting of all.
「この本が一番面白い」
