【英語の基本】比較級

　比較級（Comparative）は、「〜より..だ」という意味を表し、２つのものを比較するときに用います。

比較級の基本

◯形容詞／副詞 + -er + than
◯more + 形容詞／副詞 + than

・tall：taller than　「〜より背が高い」
・fast：faster than「〜より速い」
・beautiful：more beautiful than　「〜より美しい」

比較級の作り方

　形容詞・副詞の語の長さによって比較級の形が変わります。

（１）短い単語（１音節）→ -erをつける
１音節の形容詞・副詞は語尾に-erをつけます。

・tall → taller　「〜より背が高い」
・fast → faster「〜より速い」
・strong → stronger「〜より強い」

・Schroeder is taller than me.
「シュローダーは私より背が高い」

・This car is faster than that one.
「この車はあの車より速い」

（２）eで終わる単語 → -rをつける

・large → larger「〜より大きい」
・nice → nicer「〜より素敵」

・This cake is larger than that one.
「このケーキはあのケーキより大きい」

（３）短母音 + 子音で終わる単語 → 子音を重ねて-erをつける

・big → bigger「〜より大きい」
・hot → hotter「〜より暑い」
・fat → fatter「〜より太っている」

・Today is hotter than yesterday.
「今日は昨日より暑い」

（４）長い単語（２音節以上） → more + 形容詞／副詞
２音節以上の形容詞・副詞にはmoreをつけます。

・interesting → more interesting「〜より面白い」
・beautiful → more beautiful「〜より美しい」
・carefully → more carefully「〜より注意深く」

・This book is more interesting than that one.
「この本はあの本より面白い」

・Violet speaks more clearly than Emily.
「ヴァイオレットはエミリーよりはっきり話す」

（５）不規則変化の比較級
一部の単語は、不規則に変化します。

・good / well：better than　「〜より良い／上手に」
・bad / badly：worse than　「〜より悪い／ひどく」
・far：farther / further than「〜より遠い」

・This school is better than that one.
「この学校はあの学校より良い」

・Your French is getting better.
「あなたのフランス語はよくなっている」

・This situation is worse than before.
「この状況は前より悪い」
